Visiting Professor of Surgery 2012 - John L. Cameron, MDSansum Clinic’s first Visiting Professor of Surgery, John L. Cameron, MD, The Alfred Blalock Distinguished Service Professor of Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine visited Santa Barbara for an Academic Week February 27 –March 3, 2012. His role was to interact, teach and mentor the practicing surgeons in our community and was directly involved with teaching the surgical residents in training at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Dr. Cameron received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1958 and his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1962. His training in General and Thoracic Surgery was at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Cameron has a long-standing interest in alimentary tract diseases, and specifically in pancreatic cancer. He has operated on more patients with pancreatic cancer and performed more Whipple operations than any other surgeon in the world. For 19 years he has served as the Chief of Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Cameron delivered a lecture on William Stewart Halsted, MD: Father of American Surgery at 5:30 pm on March 1 at Cottage Hospital’s Burtness Auditorium. The lecture was open to the public. Dr. Halsted was one of the “Big Four” founding professors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
