Sansum Clinic’s Executive Team helps provide quality healthcare for the California Central Coast communities we serve by recruiting the best physicians and continuing to provide the most up-to-date facilities and advanced medical technologies to serve the healthcare needs of our patients. As a nonprofit organization we provide many vital community health services and resources and as one of the area’s largest employers, we recognize the value of our many employees and their role in providing excellent service and care.

Kurt N. Ransohoff, MD, FACP

Chief Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Ransohoff joined Sansum Clinic in 1992. Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Ransohoff earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine and a medical degree from UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles, California. He was Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine from 1989-1992, and Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor from 1988-1989.  Dr. Ransohoff was Chairman of our Internal Medicine Department from 1992-1994, and Assistant Medical Director from 1994-1997. He has been Medical Director since 1997, President since 1998, and CEO since 2002.

Chad Hine, MBA

Chief Operating Officer

Mr. Hine is a highly analytical financial executive with in-depth experience in the healthcare industry. His exceptional evaluation and planning skills make him a respected and proven leader. Before joining Sansum Clinic, Mr. Hine was CFO at Quincy Medical Group in Illinois where he oversaw all aspects of financial performance and operations for the organization and led a substantial financial turnaround that improved profitability by more than 100 percent. Prior to that he was principal and co-owner of investment bank and consultancy CEO Strategic Solutions, LLC. Mr. Hine began his career with Bank of America where he was Assistant Vice President in charge of underwriting and approving credit facilities for middle market businesses. He earned a B.S. in Accounting and Finance from Purdue University and an M.B.A. with a focus in finance and entrepreneurship from USC, where he graduated with honors.

Alexander Bauer, MBA, CPA, CHC, EJD

Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Bauer is a financial leader with an extensive background in the healthcare industry, bringing a history of building consensus for difficult changes in systems and finance processes. He finds driving a culture of accountability adds value to operating organizations. Mr. Bauer has the expertise to support rapidly changing care and reimbursement models, evolving business models and new care delivery systems. He was recognized by the Advisory Board for building a highly effective Analytics team and for his collaboration with Physician Leadership obtaining NCQA Medical Home Certification for five clinics.

Before joining Sansum Clinic, Mr. Bauer was Vice President and CFO for Renown Health, Nevada’s only integrated non-profit Health System. Prior to Renown Health, he worked as a Financial Manager of Area Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery at Kaiser Permanente and as the Business Manager and Consultant of Ambulatory Care at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Mr. Bauer received his Bachelor in Finance and Accounting from Ruhr Universitat in Bochum, Germany and his MBA with a focus in Technology Innovations Management from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. Mr. Bauer is also certified in Healthcare Compliance by the Healthcare Compliance Association.

Marjorie Newman, MD

Medical Director

Marjorie P. Felcher Newman, MD, joined Sansum Clinic as Assistant Medical Director in 2000. Previously, Dr. Newman was Executive Director of New York University Health Center where she also practiced internal medicine. Dr. Newman earned her medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY, following completion of a bachelor of arts degree in biology at Barnard College/Columbia University where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, NY. She is board certified in internal medicine. Her academic appointments include Clinical Assistant Professor of medicine at New York University Medical Center and Clinical Instructor of medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Matt Baumann, DBA, MBA

Vice President, Oncology Services

 

Baumann is a healthcare executive whose approach to problem solving and leadership is rooted in military planning and strategy.  Prior to his more recent work in healthcare, he spent seven years as an Infantry Leader in the United States Marine Corps (USMC). During this time, he led several infantry units and deployed to Afghanistan and South East Asia. Departing as a Captain of Marines, Baumann thrived in both front line and technical acquisitions roles. This technical and operational military experience shaped the thought processes and approach that drives his decision making today. Mr. Baumann received Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Business Administration from the University of Central Florida (UCF). He graduated as a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from Florida International University in 2022, with research focused on leadership effectiveness and employee engagement.   

 

Lindsay Cortina

Vice President, Strategic Initiatives

Lindsay Cortina joined the organization in 2007 within the Cancer Center’s Administration department, heading Public Relations and Administrative Projects, including the strategic planning effort which culminated in the 2012 merger of the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara with Sansum Clinic.  After the joining of the two organizations, Lindsay joined Sansum Clinic’s Corporate Administration team where she now works alongside Executive Management to lead the development and execution of strategy at every level of the organization.  She and her team manage cross-functional teams in order to plan and execute strategic improvement efforts that continually deliver on our mission of providing an excellent healthcare experience while keeping our patients as the top priority.  

Cortina’s educational background spans a wide variety of topics from her pre-med undergraduate studies at University of California Santa Barbara to lean principles and project management. She brings a passion for improving systems and processes in order to support healthcare teams in their delivery of high-quality care.

Karen Handy, MPH

Vice President of Operations

Karen Handy is a graduate of Stanford University and received her Master’s in Public Health from UCLA. Prior to joining Sansum Clinic, she worked for more than 13 years with Sutter Health/Palo Alto Medical Foundation in several roles, most recently as director of operations in primary care and weight management. Karen has devoted much of her career to helping patients and communities improve their health and reduce their risk for disease, including writing a healthy lifestyle blog and articles for Sutter Health’s award-winning consumer health website. As an operations leader, Karen has been dedicated to improving the patient experience, with a focus on service and quality excellence as well as operational efficiency.

 

Sean Johnson, MHA, BSN, RN

Chief Information Officer

Sean Johnson joined Sansum Clinic is 2010 to direct the implementation of our Electronic Health Record, The Wave.  Sean and his family have strong ties to Santa Barbara and Sansum Clinic.  Sean’s father, Dr. Joseph Johnson worked as a Psychiatrist for over twenty years at Sansum Clinic.   Mr. Johnson earned his Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Southern California and spent the first four years of his career in operations and nursing leadership.  In 2001, Mr. Johnson turned his focus from operations to healthcare information technology solutions and strategies.   Before joining Sansum Clinic, Sean helped lead the successful implementation of electronic health record programs at Oregon Health and Science University and Sutter Health.  More recently, Mr. Johnson has completed his Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of Southern California.  Sean will be overseeing the implementation and maintenance of enterprise applications and data solutions for the organization. 

Tracy Kern, CPA

Vice President, Finance, Controller

Tracy Kern joined the organization in 2019 as the Corporate Controller leading the Accounting and Purchasing teams. Ms. Kern has extensive financial leadership experience with a background in finance, accounting and auditing. She has expertise in cash management, financial and operational controls and contract negotiation.  She is passionate about using technology and process to ensure accuracy and efficiency in organizations.  Her knowledge of sound financial management practices has allowed her to manage organizations through all phases of growth and contraction to successfully achieve organizational objectives.

Before joining Sansum Clinic, Ms. Kern was CFO for CDTi and Interlink Electronics, Inc., Corporate Controller for Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation, and CFO of Chad Therapeutics. Ms. Kern holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from California Lutheran University, and is a certified public accountant.

Mara Sorkin, MBA, CHC

Compliance & Privacy Officer

Mara Sorkin is primarily responsible for developing, maintaining, and overseeing Sansum Clinic’s compliance, ethics, and HIPAA Privacy program.  Before joining Sansum Clinic, Ms. Sorkin served as the Director of Compliance for VNA Health, where she was instrumental in building that healthcare organization’s compliance and safety programs.   In 2020, Ms. Sorkin was awarded the Champion in Community Outreach Award by the Pacific Coast Business Times in recognition of her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Ms. Sorkin has devoted much of her career to supporting non-profit institutions whose missions align with her values, including previous roles at the Girl Scouts, Whitman College, and Simon & Schuster.  

Ms. Sorkin graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. from Yale University, and earned her M.B.A. from University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. She is also Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC)®.

Dan Weigel, SPHR, SHRM-SCP

Vice President, Human Resources

Dan is a results-oriented human resources leader with extensive experience building and engaging winning teams. His background includes working with diverse organizations, from startups to category leaders. Prior to joining Sansum Clinic, Dan was VP of People and Culture at Invoca, Inc., the Call Intelligence Company and Apeel Sciences. He has also held senior HR roles with national and international responsibility for Intouch Technologies, The Walking Company, Guitar Center, Circuit City, and the iconic Santa Barbara based brands Big Dog Sportswear and Jordano’s.

Focused on continuous improvement with a passion for recruiting talent, Dan brings sharp understanding of the dual focus needed to align strategic and employee need to enable business growth and profitability. Dan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration with emphasis in Labor Relations from San Diego State University. 

Dan can be found fishing, cycling or spending time with family and friends in his home in Ventura.
