The Sansum Clinic Eye Care Center has the only pediatric ophthalmologist in Santa Barbara’s tri-county area—and one of the nation’s best when it comes to meeting the unique needs of young patients. Dr. Mark Silverberg, recognized in US News & World Report’s ‘2012 America's Top Doctors’ list, has highly specialized training in examining and caring for children with eye problems.
Importance of Early Vision Screenings
Vision develops until about age nine. Early detection of problems, including crossed or wandering eye, or less obvious issues like uneven focus, is key to ensuring your child grows up with good vision in each eye.
If your child's primary care physician recommends an eye exam, you can count on Dr. Silverberg and his pediatric ophthalmology support team to identify and correct the condition. We have the knowledge, experience and resources to help your little one take in all the sights and wonder of childhood without compromise.
Your Child’s Eye Exam: What to Expect
An examination with our pediatric ophthalmologist might include:
- Vision testing
- Measuring eye position in patients with strabismus (misaligned eyes)
- Examining for abnormalities that might indicate genetic conditions, diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and eye injuries
- Determining the type and strength of glasses a child needs
Children aren’t always able to say what is bothering them and often have difficulty being patient and cooperative during an eye examination. Dr. Silverberg has a special touch when working with young patients, plus access to the latest equipment and technology designed to make their experience as comfortable as possible. Additionally, our waiting area doubles as a play room for children to enjoy.
