Camp Wheez - Free Summer Day Camp for Kids with Asthma

Camp Wheez is a day camp each year in August for elementary school children, grades 1-6 with chronic asthma, providing them with a camp experience designed for their special needs. It is free of charge and open to the community. Campers learn about their asthma while they participate in recreation and arts and crafts. Parents attend a brief workshop which provides an update on asthma care and a time to have their questions answered by an asthma specialist, followed by a play presented by the children.

Dr. Myron Liebhaber founded Camp Wheez in 1977 in collaboration with the American Lung Association. Continuing today, Dr. Liebhaber, other medical professionals, and community members volunteer their time to teach children how to manage their asthma while they get to experience good old-fashioned camp fun!

Volunteer at Camp Wheez

Students are invited to apply to be a volunteer camp counselor at Camp Wheez, day camp for elementary school children with chronic asthma.
Camp Wheez has 2 volunteer positions for students:

  • Camp counselors are high school students who help to staff the camp and guide
the children through a variety of activities. If you are selected to be a counselor
you will learn about asthma and health, gain experience working with children,
earn up to 30 community service hours and have a lot of fun!
  • Camp junior counselors are junior high or middle school students who assist the
other counselors and the staff. This position is a great opportunity to be part of
camp, gain experience toward being a counselor in the future and have a lot of
    fun!

Summary of Camp Wheez 2013

Camp Wheez was held during the first week of August.  Forty children with asthma enjoyed a typical day camp experience filled with arts & crafts, sports & recreation and skits.  While having fun they learned the strategies to manage their asthma for the best health possible.  Their parents also learned in a workshop hosted by Dr. Chang and Dr. Liebhaber.

Camp Wheez is open to the community and free of charge thanks to many supporters.  A big thank you goes out to the whole team who make Camp Wheez possible.
