Breast Cancer Care

Breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in the United States, after skin cancer. Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. At Sansum Clinic our physicians, nurses, medical assistants and staff work together to provide personal and individualized cancer care to all who enter our department. 

We are committed to providing Cancer Center of Santa Barbara with Sansum Clinic patients with the best cancer treatment available in Southern California. The Cancer Center provides medical care in three departments:

  • Radiation Oncology
  • Medical Oncology
  • Nuclear Medicine

We are the sole provider of radiation therapy in Santa Barbara. Our medical departments are complemented by our Research Program which provides patients with access to a wide variety of clinical trials and state-of-the-art care. In addition to excellent cancer care we also provide our patients with access to our Wellness programs, Cancer Resource Library, Genetic Counselors and Breast Care Navigators to help guide you through your treatment and care.

Women's Cancer Screenings

A general cancer related checkup is recommended every three years for people ages 20 to 39, and annually for people 40 and older. The checkup should include examinations for cancers of the thyroid, ovaries, lymph nodes, oral cavity and skin.  This visit should also include health counseling about tobacco, sun exposure, diet & nutrition, personal risk factors, sexual practices, and environmental and occupational exposure to carcinogens.

Ages 20 - 39
Do a breast self-exam each month. Click here for information on how to perform a breast self-exam.
Have a clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional every three years.

Age 40 and over
Have a mammogram every year.
Have a clinical breast exam by a health care professional every year close to, and preferably, before the mammogram.

Think Pink: Panel Discussion Navigating the Breast Care Continuum Think Pink, a panel discussion on navigating the breast care continuum from breast cancer prevention and genetic testing, through diagnosis, treatment and reconstruction, was presented by the Women's Council of Sansum Clinic in October of 2013.The expert panel was comprised of local Santa Barbara area physicians and medical providers each with specialties related to breast care.
