The selected RN will deliver specialized nursing care to patients in accordance with the standards defined by the California State Board of Nursing, the American Nurses Association (ANA) and Sansum Clinic within their department.
Functions as a primary liaison between patients, staff and physicians. Job functions will be modified and improved as necessary to promote a team effort.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)
1. Provides highly specialized and complex nursing care/procedures to patients specific to the department. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards demonstrating positive outcomes in patient care.
2. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care.
3. Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness.
4. May prepare equipment and aid physician during treatment, examination and testing of patients.
5. Observes, records and reports patient’s condition. Documents and reports reaction to drugs and treatments to providers.
6. Educates patient/family about diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.
7. May be asked to act as a team leader and coordinate nursing care for patients in the home department.
8. Triages to ensure appointment preferences are given to patients in emergency situations.
9. Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriation information.
10. Responds to, documents and refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls. Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.
11. Maintains/reviews patient charts, records and other pertinent information. May post test and examination results.
12. Maintains strict patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA.
13. Must thoroughly understand and follow established policy and procedure under minimal supervision as well as make decisions within established clinical nursing standards.
14. Participates in department quality improvement, clinic safety, infection control and hazardous materials programs and activities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and abilities of personnel placed in similar or the same positions.
> Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
> Ability to interact with patients, medical and administrative staff effectively on a daily basis.
> Must be able to effectively make discrete observations and be able to receive and interpret pertinent details when interacting with patients.
> Must be able to adapt to varied age-specific and/or specialized groups, e.g. Neonatal, Infant, Toddler, Child, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric.
> Must be able to do math calculations on the spot.
> Must be able to compare and identify differences in text (i.e. proofread and check calculations).
> Must have the considerable motor coordination, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination and the ability to differentiate colors, shapes and shadings.
> Must have knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment.
> Knowledge of professional nursing theory, regulations and practices as pertinent to California to give and evaluate patient care.
> Must have the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; and prepare for occasional stress from workload.
> Must have a valid license in the State of California as a Registered Nurse.
> Current CPR certification at time of hire is required.
In addition to CPR, ACLS is required at time of hire in the following areas, Cardiology, GI Lab, Urgent Care and Outpatient Surgery (OPS).
*New graduates are welcome, however, a minimum of one (1) or two (2) years recent acute care or ambulatory care experience as an RN is preferred or experience in specific specialty.
*Extra certifications pertaining to field of specialty preferable but not required.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The work environment is that of a clinic. It requires a considerable amount of physical work not to exceed lifting or moving (unassisted) fifty (50) lbs. Requires full range of body motion including handling lifting and transferring patients or supplies, pushing wheelchairs, placing equipment manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.. Must be able to navigate between rooms, halls, stairs and equipment in response to emergencies.
The job requires extended periods of standing, some bending, stooping, walking and lifting. There may be limited exposure to communicable disease. There may be exposure to malodorous, infectious, body fluids and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleaning agents. Requires regular use of personal protective equipment due to potential exposure to infectious waste and body fluids.
Employee must pass the Sansum Clinic pre-placement physical screening exam.
