Sansum Clinic Included in Anthem Blue Cross Network for Covered California Healthcare Exchange

Santa Barbara, Calif. -- Sansum Clinic announced today that its 23 outpatient medical clinics will be available for patients who buy health insurance from Anthem Blue Cross through Covered California, the new online marketplace for health insurance.

“We are delighted to be able to offer our services through Anthem Blue Cross to those patients using the Covered California Exchange. We think it is important to be able to participate in this important new avenue by which patients will get insurance,” said Kurt Ransohoff, MD, CEO at Sansum Clinic.

“Anthem Blue Cross’s Web site should reflect the addition of Sansum Clinic and its providers into its exchange network in early December. While we cannot confirm when Covered California will update its Web site to add Sansum Clinic, people should rest assured that those who purchase the Anthem PPO product will have access to Sansum Clinic,” said Vince Jensen, COO and President of Sansum Clinic. “The key is that patients know they have the ability to access Sansum Clinic when they need care,” added Jensen.

“We’re thrilled to be the only insurer to have Sansum Clinic in our exchange network,” said Ernie Schwefler, Regional Vice President of Provider Contracting at Anthem Blue Cross. “Central Coast residents who want to sign up with Anthem Blue Cross can sign up online, contact a local broker or call 866-791-5538 starting on Monday, November 25."

Because of recent changes, Californians who want their insurance coverage through the exchange to start on January 1, 2014 must enroll by December 23, 2013.

The new marketplace for health insurance is one of the most important events in national healthcare since the start of the Medicare program over 45 years ago. While major portions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will not begin until January 1, 2014, Sansum Clinic and other healthcare providers across the country are working to anticipate what impact the ACA will have as we care for a larger population under intense economic pressures.

"The exchanges are a major sea change in health insurance and we're still in the early stages. We encourage patients to contact their insurance provider directly if they have specific questions about coverage,” said Ransohoff.

As a nonprofit organization, Sansum Clinic's mission is to provide an excellent healthcare experience, recognizing our first priority is the patients we serve. For more than 90 years, Sansum Clinic has been taking care of patients within this community, as well as the thousands from outside our area who choose Sansum Clinic for its medical expertise.

Sansum Clinic continues to update the webpage to provide patients with health insurance information and resources.

General Overview of Healthcare Reform

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed a comprehensive health reform bill into law. Entitled the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), this new legislation is largely focused on the expansion of healthcare coverage, and the control of rising healthcare costs. The ACA will require most U.S. citizens and legal residents to have health insurance. Through the creation of state-based American Health Benefit Exchanges, which act as an online marketplace for insurance, individuals can purchase coverage. Individuals/families with incomes between 138%-400% of the federal poverty level, will be eligible for federal subsidies to offset a portion of the total cost. The ACA is complex and additional information can be obtained through your current health insurer or by visiting the official California website at
