Swine Flu Vaccine
- What kinds of H1N1 influenza (also known as “swine flu”) vaccine are available?
-
The 2009 novel H1N1 influenza vaccine (also known as “swine flu” vaccine) will be available in 2 forms:
- H1N1 Flumist Vaccine (live attenuated intranasal spray)
- H1N1 Injectable Vaccine
The Flumist can only be given to people between the ages of 2-49 years and cannot be given to pregnant women or people with asthma or other chronic medical conditions.
Sansum Clinic will be following the Santa Barbara Public Health Department guidelines regarding which categories of patients are eligible for which type of vaccine.
- When will the H1N1 Flumist Vaccine be available?
-
Sansum Clinic has received an initial small allotment of the H1N1 Flumist vaccine (live attenuated intranasal spray), which is to be used in healthy children 2 through 9 years of age and in healthy, non-pregnant caretakers of infants who are under the age of 6 months.
If you believe that you or your child should receive Flumist based upon the above criteria please contact your health care provider.
- When will the H1N1 Injectable Vaccine be available?
-
Sansum Clinic has received an initial small allotment of the injectable H1N1 vaccine which, according to the Santa Barbara PHD guidelines, is to be used preferentially for pregnant women, as well as for children and young adults (6 months-24 years old) with substantial medical conditions that affect their respiratory and/or immune systems.
If you are pregnant and under the care of a Sansum Clinic Obstetrician/Gynecologist, please contact the Sansum Clinic Obstetrics Department to obtain your H1N1 vaccine.
If you believe that you or your child meets the above criteria, please contact your Sansum Clinic health care provider to determine if you or your child should receive the injectable vaccine.
We hope to receive more vaccine in the coming weeks and anticipate that the guidelines will expand once more vaccine is available.
