Hospitalist
Hospitalists, also known as "inpatient physicians", specialize in providing direct medical care to and supervision of hospitalized patients.
Because hospitalists spend such a large part of our day in the hospital, we are able to be much more accessible to patients and their families than a typical doctor who must spend most of the day off-site at an office or clinic. Our skills as primary care providers are enhanced by special expertise in detecting, anticipating, and responding to common inpatient disorders. By handling such problems early, we can have a profound effect on a patient's chances for positive outcomes. In fact, several studies published in highly-respected medical journals such as The Annals of Internal Medicine and The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) have affirmed that hospitalists' patients have lower costs and are able to leave the hospital sooner.
By maintaining that constant presence at the hospital, we develop a detailed understanding of each patient's unique condition and needs and maintain strong working relationships with the patient's entire team of hospital caregivers. This, is turn, makes us excellent resources for coordinating inpatient services and facilitating the smoothest possible transition to post-acute care (e.g. home health care, nursing home, rehabilitation center, etc.).
