Sansum Clinic cares for the good health of people who could not otherwise afford medical services through its collaboration with Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics (SBNC).
Medical services offered include Diagnostic Services, Colonoscopy Screening and Mammography Screening.
Diagnostic Services
Sansum Clinic cares for the good health of people who could not otherwise afford medical services through its collaboration with SBNC, providing more than $250,000 annually in diagnostic services (e.g. CT scans and heart studies). SBNC qualifies patients and then refers them to Sansum Clinic. These are patients with no health insurance and without the means to pay for much needed medical services.
Colonoscopy Screening
Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics serve as the gatekeeper for two programs. The first is the colonoscopy screening program which was established through a generous gift to Sansum Clinic from Santa Barbara philanthropist, Dr. Virgil Elings. The colonoscopy screening program is the largest free colon cancer screening program on record in the country. Dr. Elings made a financial commitment to screen 400 residents with an overall program goal of 1,000 screenings. As of March 2011, more than 200 people have benefited from the program.
Mammography Screening
The second program is the Breast Cancer Prevention Program that offers mammography screenings to women ages 40-49. In 2009, California Public Health Department made a drastic cut to its Every Woman Counts program, discontinuing free mammograms to low-income women ages 40-49. The American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual screenings. This collaborative program between Sansum Clinic and the SBNC will provide low-income women in their 40s access to free mammograms as part of their ongoing health check-up routine.
